“在中国,拍摄照片总是一种仪式,它总要包括摆好姿势而且还必须要征得同意。”苏珊·桑塔格(Susan Sontag)在《论摄影》(On Photography),曾这样描述中国人的摄影观。让拍摄照片成为仪式,不仅仅是普通人的拍照行为,媒体摄影也好,时尚摄影也好,沙龙摄影也好,就连在当代艺术中的摄影,在中国似乎都是为某种目的而存在的仪式化工具,况且普通人的拍照行为还不能称之为摄影,只能叫拍照。
当然,摄影仪式论是苏珊·桑塔格所看到的30年前的中国所得出的论调,从上世纪90年代末开始,中国年轻一代的摄影者似乎一握上相机这武器,就处心积虑地想砸碎那些所谓的仪式,而且还要进一步地打破摄影的“阶级歧视”,企图将摄影这一专业人士用于炫耀的“特权”,解放成任何普通人都能掌握的表达权力。“自·私”这个联展的命名,就是取自于这些新生代摄影者对待摄影的态度——自我表达,私人体验,个性语言,甚至是隐私的、自闭的、窥视的影像。像戴牟雨、姚松鑫、杨长虹、苏焊光(Alex)和白川,他们都是以摄影为职业的媒体摄影师和商业摄影师,但是在他们看来,摄影除了是一种谋生的工具,更是一种生活方式和生活必需品,他们除了制造大量流通于市场的摄影产品,但同时也为自己存留了更多的私家珍藏的“非卖品”;而在林志鹏(编号223)、宋涛和季炜煜(鸟头小组)、刘一青(青头一)这样的年轻创作人那里,摄影则是最得心应手的创作方式,他们用摄影无微不至地扫描与自己最密切相关的生活和人群以及自己,将现实生存演绎成独特自我的影像世界,而且毫不在意地消解了所谓纪实与虚构的界限。
可以说,上述的新生代摄影者在进行的所有的影像探索,几乎都是自发的,而不是为了迎合某种游戏规则。他们的摄影在最初只与自己有关,就像他们中很多人在摄影中的独特署名,只是以摄影的方式描述自己的个体存在,验证自己的个体价值。但在摄影工具日趋普及,摄影成本迅速降低,传播渠道日益畅通多元的今天,摄影也变成了一种个体传媒和社交方式,“自·私”摄影已经成为年轻人的同好和共识,也正在成为当下中国一种日益盛行的年轻人亚文化。也许南·戈尔丁(Nan Goldin)和荒木经惟(Araki Nobuyoshi)等所掀起的“私摄影”大潮对这些中国的年轻人有着潜移默化的影响,但他们所处的时代和环境却决定了他们不同以往的摄影特质,尤其是摄影这种年轻的艺术它本该就有这样年轻的姿态。
在2005年11月首届连州国际摄影年展,这批来自广州和上海的新生代摄影师在“自·私——中国新生代摄影联展”和“走神——上海9人摄影展”中集体亮相,展示出不同于传统摄影的新鲜生猛。本画册中作者作品介绍的配图就是他们在连州的展览现场图片,2005年12月17日,我们将这两个在连州国际摄影年展中获得杰出策展人奖的展览合二为一,搬到广州依云小镇艺术沙龙,让这些有独特展览方式的摄影作品再次产生新的“化学反应”。
Susan Suntag says in her On Photography that for the Chinese, taking photos is a ritual that involves a lot of posing and discussion for approval. It seems that for a long time, all forms of photography can only exist in China as a ritualized instrument, and it is too high-browed for ordinary people.
However, ever since the 1990s, the younger generation of Chinese photographers began to take their cameras as a weapon to destroy the old rituals. The title of this joint exhibition, Selfhood , demonstrates these young people抯 attitude towards photography, namely, self-expression, private experience, individualized language.
For the professional photographers such as Dai MengYu, Yao SongXin, Yang ChangHong, Alex So and Bai Chuan, they depend on photography for a living, but they also make a lot of not-for-sale works in the leisure time. Photography becomes a useful tool to scan and reconstruct the world for those young pioneers including Lin ZhiPeng, Song Tao & Ji WeiYu, and Liu YiQing.

本雅明早就说过摄影的本质绝不是一种美感,而更接近于“光学无意识”。而之后人们关于都市摄影的阐述为这一种“光学无意识”的概念与都市生活的片段与凌乱感找到了渊源,从而也为都市中的影像制造者提供了摄影在“光学无意识”的纪录功能之外的观念表达功能的合理性;更进一步的是,这一合理性赋予了本来仅具瞬间意义的摄影以永恒的可能。
然而在这一系列的渊源、合理性与可能性的善意而理性的分析之下,摄影的功能被大大拓宽,以至于发展到今天的现状,摄影出现了被过度使用的嫌疑。从影像创作者来说,技术操控的简便使部分艺术家在“观念在先”的观念指导下,在“形式取胜”的形式营造下,利用摄影做出一些仅仅为了表达观念与卖弄形式的粗糙作品,而难觅影像本身的魅力所在;而从影像的阅读者来说,人们总习惯于将自己在画面中看到的意义强行理解为摄影师的创作初衷,用各种猜忌同样抹杀了影像语言本身所具有的价值。
其实“光学无意识”终究是一种无意识,正如矫健向他的学生们强调的:摄影只是一种获取影像的手段。胶片在其成像的一霎那,它只是一个化学反应或光电耦合过程;摄影师按下快门的瞬间,那也只是一次精神上的条件反射所带来的神经与肌肉系统的一系列反应。在冰冷的化学和物理分析背后,去探寻自己、或摄影师在此条件反射的一霎那,它背后所蕴含着的产生反射的原因,这也许是更真实的创作或者解读影像的方式,而这一真实性正体现为作者对心里感受的刨根问底及其诚实表达。
心理感受与情绪表达常常是偶然的,而这却正与作为“光学无意识”的摄影的偶然性不谋而合;摄影师带着自我游走于城市角落,期待着某次触发的不期而至,而后条件反射式地捕捉着时间的切片,这是一次理性无意识的退避和情绪的自然流露,就像少女幻想时失神的微笑;当然,摄影师情绪中本来所含有的社会因素,最终一样会向读者传递出关于时代的信息与判断。与此相比,利用影像语言对充满理性思考的成熟观念的繁复阐述,其表达的真实性与纯粹性便足可质疑,它更像是一次亢奋的空洞的说教。
在此联展,正是一次关于影像语言与生命经验的真实融合的尝试,同时我们也可以从这些年轻的摄影师的作品中,看到他们以各自独特的影像语言延续着城市与摄影天然的宿命。
摄影自诞生以来直到今天,似乎依然在努力寻找自己的身份,然而她与城市的缘分已经是一种既成的现实了。尤其在现代城市生活的文化消费需求的刺激下,显然它不再甘于作为传统艺术形式发展在今天的变异,它在用崭新的自成一体的语言系统上演自己的发展,成为一种充满着现代性的消费品以及表达工具,而这批新生代摄影师的作品正是在此意义上的一系列有意思的尝试。
Benjamin said that the essence of photography is absolutely not a kind of aesthetic feeling, but is rather close to an Optical Non-consciousness. Subsequent definitions of city photography have found the relationship between such Optic Non-consciousnessand the feeling of segment and disorder of city life, thus providing city photographers with the rationality of notion expression function of photography aside from its recording function of Optic Non-consciousness. In addition, such rationality brings a possibility of permanence for photography which originally only has a transient meaning.
However, with the series of benign and rational analysis of such relationship, rationalities and possibilities, the function of photography is much enlarged, to the extent that photography is suspected to be over-utilized basing on its status quo. For some photographers, under the guidance of Conception First and with the belief of Form Prevail, the convenience of technical manipulation has facilitated them to produce some works which only exist for expression of notions and show-off of their forms, and which have completely lost the inherent charm of photography. And for some photograph viewers, they are accustomed to forcing their own understanding of the images as the original intentions of the photographers, and obliterate the inherent value of the photographic language with their various guesses.
Optic Non-consciousness is after all a kind of unconsciousness, just as Jiao Jian has pointed out for his students, that photography is only a means of acquiring images. The instant of imaging of films is just a part of the chemical reaction or photo-electricity coupling process. And the instant when the photographer presses the shutter is only one of the series of reactions of the nerve and muscle systems brought by a conditioned reflex of spirit. Seeking for the reasons of such reflex at the above-mentioned instant behind the cool chemical and physical analysis maybe is the more genuine way to create or understand the images, which is just embodied by the author to get to the bottom and honestly express his feelings in the mind.
Psychological perceptions and expressions of feelings are often incidental, which just happen to coincide with the casualness of photography as a kind of Optic Non-consciousness. The photographers wander in the corners of city, expecting the drop up of some touching off events, and then capturing the slices of time just like a conditioned reflex. This is an unconscious retreat of nous and a natural expression of feeling, just like the strayed smile of a girl in fantasy. Of course, the social factors that originally in the feelings of photographers will finally transmit to the viewers the information and judgments of the times. As a comparison, the tedious reiteration of mature notions after rational thoughts in the form of image language is rather like an excited and hollow preach, of which the authenticity and purity of expression should rather be doubted.
The group exhibition is just an attempt of real amalgamation of image language with the experience of life. At the same time, we can see from the works of the young photographers of Shanghai the fact that they are continuing the natural foreordination of the city and photography with their own unique image language.
From its birth, photography seems to have been trying to seek for its own identity. However, the lot of photography with city now has become a kind of reality. Especially with the stimulation of cultural consumption of modern city life, photography is obviously not satisfied to be only the variation of a traditional form of art. Photography is making its own development with the brand-new self-integrated language system, to the extent that it has become a modern consumable commodity and expression tool, and the works of the new generation photographers are just a series of meaningful tries in such a meaning.
